CSE alum Sushant Sinha named one of 18 “Young Innovators Under 35” in India

Sushant Sinha, CSE PhD 2009, has been named one of 18 remarkable young technology innovators in India by MIT’s Technology Review India. His selection was announced in the March 2011 issue of Technology Review India, and he will be recognized at MIT Technology Review India’s EmTech Conference, which takes place March 22-23 in Bangalore.

Dr. Sinha was selected for his development of Indian Kanoon, a search engine of Indian laws and court judgments. The free search engine makes Indian law accessible, providing the most relevant Indian laws and court judgments in response to a query. The site is unique in that it breaks down daunting law documents into the smallest possible clauses and integrates laws and/or statutes with court judgments when delivering search results.

Dr. Sinha began developing the website in May 2007 and launched it on January 4, 2008. He began the project as a way to enrich court judgments by linking them with laws and other references. This turned out to be so useful that he evolved the site into a search engine for Indian law.

The website has gained quick attention and is used by roughly half a million unique visitors and has more than two million page views every month. It hosts over 1.2 million documents, and is integrated with the Supreme Court of India, 22 High Courts, and 17 Tribunals to provide real-time information on judgments to users. Dr. Sinha is now working to further integrate the site with all Indian state laws and with different rules formed by government agencies.

Dr. Sinha currently works in the Document Processing Team at Yahoo! India. His advisor at the University of Michigan was Professor Farnam Jahanian.
