Ishtiaque Navid receives SVCF Scholarship to support his research in semiconductor materials

Navid’s research is focused on artificial photosynthesis and optoelectronics using III-Nitride based semiconductor materials.

ECE doctoral student Ishtiaque Ahmed Navid received the John B. Fenn, Sr. Foundation Endowed Scholarship from the Society of Vacuum Coaters Foundation (SVCF) to support his research on projects related to artificial photosynthesis and optoelectronics using III-Nitride based semiconductor materials.

 That will eventually help us combat the looming global warming problem to impact millions of lives in a positive way.

Navid is working to provide a scalable and stable platform for low-cost green energy production and also help realize ultra-small next-generation display technology. Currently, he is working on the epitaxy and characterization of dilute anion doped III-Nitride semiconductors for solar fuel applications.

“Our projects in artificial photosynthesis aim to produce low-cost hydrogen fuel based green energy by using only two of the most abundant natural resources, sunlight and water.” said Navid. “That will eventually help us combat the looming global warming problem to impact millions of lives in a positive way.”

Navid received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). His interest in conducting experimental research on semiconductor nanomaterials drew him to Michigan and Prof. Zetian Mi’s research group.

“Our research group is a very dynamic one with a lot of members with diverse skill sets. Working in such an environment has helped me learn a lot about the minute details of research,” said Navid, who also added, “The research facility here in Michigan Engineering is one of the best in the world. I really feel lucky to be able to work in such a resourceful environment.”
